Fast track to Joy…

After a break up, grief, disappointment or financial insecurity it is hard to hit the button on joy instantly. As with anything in life you need to work at it and sadly there is no short cut or fast track.

Tony Robbins outlines 9 ways to be full present and feel more joy, which are great but they will take time and most importantly your focus and commitment.

  1. Let go of the past – “Your past is not your future” Robbins explains we need to focus on the present and understand the emotions we are feeling, but not see them as hopeless. Focusing on the present and finding new emotions attached to the new experiences, really notice them and acknowledge a shift.
  2. Gratitude – Another way to let go of the past is to begin to really be grateful for everything that is happening in the present. A gratitude journal is a daily log of everything you have been grateful for throughout the day. This positivity exercise puts some of the negatives into perspective and gives you a much better outlook.
  3. Use the law of attraction – Robbins says that the more we focus on the positives the more we can link to joy, he says “What you focus on you attract” and in my coaching sessions I often use the quote “What you focus on becomes reality”
  4. Surround yourself with positive people – Spend time with people who are optimistic rather than pessimistic and spend less time with the people who are the doom and gloom merchants.
  5. Change your physiology – Stand taller and sit with better posture. Most importantly start to wear a smile. Another thing I would add to Robbins physiology is wear clothes that make you feel good and bin the ones that don’t make you look or feel good.
  6. Create positive daily rituals – Your daily routine, what you eat? how often you exercise? give you structure and purpose. The right mindset as to how start the day with purpose and meaning.
  7. Be fully present – True joy is about really noticing, being there mentally and physically, even if it is just looking at nature or being there for your partner. We need to unplug from the outside world eg. put your phone out of sight and just be fully present.
  8. Find your purpose – Why do you get out of bed in the morning? Simon Sinek says that we should all start with Why. It is not what we do, it is always Why we do it. Your Why in life is your purpose your compass the direction you live life by. For example mine is “To help people to think differently…”
  9. Give back – the secret to living is giving. Robbins says the more we put back and the more we will get back. This does not have to be big gestures, even unloading the dishwasher, cooking for your partner or walking the dog are all positive.

Take time to work through the 9 steps and they will take time. Being fully present in each of the steps helps you move that little bit closer to joy. No emotion is continuous however by investing in each of the areas there is a pathway to joy.
