What a Village Fete Can Teach You About Running a Great Team...?

On Saturday we rocked up to the annual Bramley Village Fete.

A team of us run the second-hand clothes stall which, over the years, has become a bigger and bigger operation. What started as a simple fete stall has gradually evolved into something much more organised — and surprisingly professional.

We’ve learnt a huge amount over the years about preparation, teamwork, presentation and customer experience. In fact, many of the lessons apply just as much to business as they do to selling clothes in a village field.

Here are some of the things that have made the biggest difference for us:

  • Strong branding — calling ourselves The Bramley Boutique rather than “the second-hand clothes stall” instantly elevates the experience.
  • Creating anticipation — we don’t open immediately. We tape the stall off so there’s a clear “opening moment”.
  • Clear roles and responsibilities — everyone mucks in, but people also have designated tasks.
  • Preparation beforehand — the hard work done before the fete makes the day itself run smoothly.
  • Being selective about stock — quality consistently beats quantity.
  • Making things easy for customers — categorising clothes helps people browse quickly and comfortably.
  • Being flexible — offers and bundle deals help stock move and keep customers engaged.
  • Clear signage — people need to know exactly what’s available and where to find it.
  • Creating a better customer experience — even something as simple as providing a mirror helps people feel more confident buying.

What strikes me is how many of these lessons apply to teams and businesses more generally.

Good organisations also need:

  • strong branding,
  • healthy boundaries,
  • clear roles,
  • thorough preparation,
  • quality offerings,
  • clarity for clients,
  • flexibility,
  • easy-to-navigate marketing materials,
  • and opportunities for people to “try before they buy”.

Sometimes the best business lessons don’t come from boardrooms or strategy days. Sometimes they come from a village fete, a clothing rail, and a group of volunteers working together well.
