Delegating effectively…
If delegating is not done effectively it can be construed as just dumping. Think of the benefits before you even begin. Reduction in your own workload, development of team members leading to a more collaborative team with more shared responsibility.
A good way to start is to think about what you are doing and then deciding what can be delegated:-
- Write down 8 jobs that you do
- Which ones are you good at (give them a sign or symbol)?
- Give another sign or symbol to the ones you enjoy doing
- Consider out of the 8 which ones are routine
- Cross off the ones that only you can do
At the end of this exercise you should be left with some tasks that you can delegate.
Think of a suitable team member and give a really structured plan of how they can ultimately own the task.
- First step is to explain what you want it to look like at the end (overall vision or big picture you are creating). This is not to overwhelm the individual but to know what you are setting out to achieve gives overall clarity. “Begin with the end in mind” – Stephen Covey (7 Habits of highly effective people)
- Explain why you have chosen the person, so that they feel valued and that you have thought a lot about the right person to give the task to.
- Provide training and key dates to check-in
- Trust them with the task
- Appraise them on their performance
- Transfer the ownership of that task to them
